MEXICAN CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY DEBUTS IN LOS ANGELES
The company, “Mexico en Movimiento” (Mexico in Motion) will present three contemporary dance works with a unique style which merges contemporary dance with traditional folk without losing its national character. Regional folk, classical and contemporary music, all by Mexican composers, is integrated into the repertoire, which celebrates the roots of Mexico but immerses itself with traditions and ceremonies. Ms. Basanta uses movement, color, and music blending different folk styles together to create a unique abstract compilation which embraces her culture and traditions. Ms. Basanta’s career spans more than two decades as a dancer, choreographer, artistic director, and leader in Mexico’s art community. Her accolades include the Artistry of Mexico award presented on behalf of the United States Congress, and the Cesar Chavez Award from the University of Michigan, Lansing. The three part production will include Tierra de mis Pasiones, Paso de mi Memoria, and Sueños. The choreographies reflect a new vision of Mexican dance that is part of Mexico’s burgeoning contemporary dance scene. Presented by Academia de la Danza Amalia Hernandez, Mexico en Movimiento will perform for one night only at the Harriet and Charles Fine Arts Complex on Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 8:00PM.
